Our professional technicians frequently visit homes in historic Laurelhurst, Willamette Heights, and other Portland neighborhoods where aging systems need reliable repair and ongoing HVAC maintenance.
Common HVAC Issues in Southwest Portland
We know that a “no-heat” call in Southwest Hills or Portland Heights often involves unique challenges. The steep terrain and multi-level architecture in these neighborhoods frequently lead to long duct runs that restrict airflow. When we arrive, we don’t just swap parts; we test static pressure and check zoning to ensure the repair actually solves the comfort issue on every floor.
Conversely, in neighborhoods like Hillsdale and Bridlemile, we frequently encounter mixed-era remodels. If you have uneven temperatures in a newer addition versus the original structure, we look for issues that standard repairs might miss.
Common issues we resolve:
- Short cycling and breaker trips
- Heat pumps losing efficiency in cold/damp weather
- Thermostat and sensor failures
- Unusual noises or odors (often moisture-related in shaded areas like Marshall Park)
Exceptional AC Repair
While Portland is known for having a fairly mild climate, it can get quite hot in the summertime. On hot days, your air conditioner has to work harder to keep your home cool. This is especially true for homes in neighborhoods like Bridlemile or Hayhurst, where west-facing exposure can spike indoor temperatures significantly. As a result, breakdowns are more likely to happen. Our licensed AC repair technicians service systems across Bridlemile, Forest Park, Kings Heights, Portsmouth, St. Johns, Southwest Hills, and Maplewood, keeping families cool when temperatures spike.
If you need to fix your air conditioning unit, our Portland AC repair technicians handle the job. Whether your system isn’t turning on or there is an unusual smell, our team quickly diagnoses and fixes the underlying problem.
Thanks to our hassle-free scheduling, you can easily arrange an appointment with one of our licensed technicians. We also offer emergency availability, so you don’t have to swelter in the heat while you wait for AC repairs. Need AC repair today? Reach out for same-day AC services.
AC Installation Experts
If you are thinking about installing an air conditioner in your home, we offer reliable HVAC solutions Portland residents need. Portland weather swings, from cool, wet winters to short, intense heat waves, put your system to the test. We design for local conditions so you stay comfortable year-round. From Pearl District condos to family homes in Overlook, Arbor Lodge, and Arlington Heights, we’ve installed efficient AC systems across Portland.
During your HVAC appointment, we discuss the advantages of ductless AC and central air conditioners for your home. Ductless systems are particularly popular for the mid-century homes found in Vermont Hills or Markham that lack the crawlspace room for traditional ductwork. Meanwhile, in Northeast Portland areas like Grant Park, we specialize in adding AC to multi-story craftsmans without damaging historic molding.
During the initial consultation, we calculate the right capacity and estimate costs. We also recommend energy-efficient options and smart thermostats. After determining the right AC installation for your home, we provide a free estimate.
High-Quality AC Replacements
If you’re looking for AC service in Portland, we can help. We’ve helped homeowners from Linnton to Kings Heights, and we will serve you too. Once your unit reaches 10 years old, it is more likely to experience frequent breakdowns.
Normally, we recommend getting an air conditioning replacement when systems are 10 to 15 years old and have frequent repair problems. You can also tell if you need a replacement for your AC by looking at your energy bill.
If your bill has gone up without any obvious reason, you may need to get a new air conditioner. Additionally, it makes sense to replace if the repair costs are similar to the price of a new system.
AC Tune-Up & Preventive Maintenance
Portland may be known for its mild climate, but summer heat waves can push your cooling system hard, especially in neighborhoods like Bridlemile or Hayhurst, where west-facing exposure spikes indoor temperatures. Without routine maintenance, breakdowns become far more likely when you need your system most.
A professional air conditioner tune-up keeps your system running efficiently and catches small problems before they become expensive repairs. During a tune-up, our licensed technicians check refrigerant levels, clean evaporator and condenser coils, test electrical connections, calibrate your thermostat, and verify airflow throughout the system. This preventive approach extends equipment life and helps lower your energy bills.
Looking for an air conditioner tune-up in the Portland area? Our technicians service homes across Bridlemile, Forest Park, Kings Heights, Portsmouth, St. Johns, Southwest Hills, Maplewood, and beyond.
Professional Portland Furnace Installations and Replacements
Replacing an old furnace doesn’t have to be difficult. With our HVAC expertise, you can determine an efficient option. We handle furnace installations in Mt. Tabor, Multnomah Village, and Hillsdale, where we fit modern, high-efficiency units into tighter mechanical closets. In Southeast Portland neighborhoods like Sellwood and Woodstock, we frequently upgrade older oil furnaces in basements with low clearance.
In most cases, furnace replacements take less than a day. To make getting a new system easier, we offer Portland HVAC financing with low interest rates. Once you call, we’ll perform a full inspection, calculate the right size, and discuss the best heating options for your home.
Heat Pump Services: Installation & Same-Day Repairs
Heat pumps are ideal for the Pacific Northwest climate, providing efficient heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. We specialize in:
- Heat Pump Installation & Replacement: Perfect for homes in Sylvan Highlands looking to move away from fossil fuels.
- Heat Pump Repair: We troubleshoot common issues like defrost mode failures or refrigerant leaks.
- Heat Pump Maintenance: Regular heat pump checks keep the outdoor unit clear of debris, a common issue in leaf-heavy neighborhoods like Marshall Park.
Gas Fireplace Services
Nothing beats the ambiance of a gas fireplace during a rainy Portland winter. Beyond furnaces, we install, repair, and maintain gas fireplaces. If your pilot light won’t stay lit or you need a safety inspection in your West Hills living room, our technicians can provide the gas fireplace solutions your home needs.
Same-Day Heating Repairs
Even with the best brands, furnace repairs and heat pump repairs will be necessary from time to time. A broken heater isn’t just an inconvenience, it can be a safety issue. In areas like Ashcreek and Crestwood, where power fluctuations can occur during winter storms, ensuring your system restarts safely is a priority. Whenever we work on a furnace or heat pump, we do everything we can to make the system work like new again.
When the weather turns cold, you can’t afford to wait days for heating repair services. We know how important quick diagnosis is. Trust us to provide quality heating repairs across Portland.
From Arbor Lodge and Kenton to Southwest Portland neighborhoods like Hillsdale, Maplewood, and Southwest Hills, we provide same-day furnace repairs you can depend on. When you work with our HVAC company, you enjoy the convenience of same-day service. Book your heat pump and furnace repair and get heat back fast.
Schedule Heating and Cooling Maintenance Services in Portland
To keep your HVAC system in working order, you need reliable heating and air conditioning maintenance. We recommend scheduling an air conditioner tune-up near you before summer to ensure your cooling system is ready for peak demand, given Portland’s challenges such as:
- Historic homes in Ladd’s Addition
- Heavy fir needle debris in Arnold Creek and Marshall Park
- Rainy basements
- Heat waves
- Wildfire smoke
You should get your air conditioner serviced before summer. Then, schedule heat pump maintenance or furnace maintenance in the fall. Maintenance helps you avoid expensive repairs and unexpected breakdowns, extends equipment life, and can improve efficiency. A properly maintained HVAC system uses less energy.
Aside from Portland HVAC repair, we also manage your indoor air quality services. Our technicians service brands like Carrier and can review Portland HVAC financing options.

Customer Reviews/Testimonials

I want to give props out to Central Air, of Portland Oregon, and their plumber Cody Vance. Cody went way above the call of duty and helped us restore our home’s hot water. We had gone almost 2 weeks without hot water because of a hot water leak. We’ve been dealing with insurance company red tape, and having issues getting everything restored. We used Central Air last Spring to put in our furnace and knew that they had decent people working there, and hoped they could help us. Cody came out and took excellent care of us. We had told him that we were my wife’s 88!y/o Mother’ caretaker and were really concerned about not having clean hot water for her care. I courtly Cody’s heart opened up, and he helped us come up with a plan to get our issues resolved. He re-worked some of our water lines, and gas pipes to make them safer and more sturdy. Once our floor was replaced and repaired he came over on a Sunday morning with one day notice to make sure we were back in hot water!
Cody is a great plumber and more importantly a great person. Thanks for sending him our way!
My AC wasn’t working during one of the hottest weeks in Portland. I had just installed a new thermostat and so I went to the Honeywell directory and called nearly 10 HVAC companies. The customer service was mediocre at best. Then I called Central Air and Heating and Jody accommodated my schedule and quickly. Tony showed up right in the scheduled window and got to work. Very courteous, competent, and knowledgeable. He fixed the problem, and now I am writing a review in my perfectly cooled home
We recently moved to Portland and needed to have maintenance done on our furnace and AC unit. They had been originally installed by Central Air so I called to make an appointment. Jody at the office was great and arranged for John Van Buskirk to come out within two days of my calling. John was great: friendly, professional, courteous, and willing to answer my incessant questions. He went over and above. I could not have asked for a more satisfying experience.
As he was leaving, I asked about our tankless hot water unit; he explained a few things about it and suggested I call Jody and schedule a plumber to come out to deal with some issues identified by our home inspectors. The very next day, Cody Vance showed up at our house. He explained very clearly what was causing the problem, fixed everything, and gave me very clear information on proper homeowner maintenance of the unit. Like John, he was fantastic: friendly, professional, courteous, and helpful.
I am very pleased with Central Air and in particular with Jody, John, and Cody. Highly recommended.
FAQs About HVAC & Plumbing Services in Portland, OR
Is it cheaper to repair or replace an air conditioner unit?
In most cases, repair costs less than replacement, especially for newer units. Replacement may offer better long-term value if your AC is older, nearing 10 years, or needs frequent repairs.
How much does it cost to fix a heating problem?
The cost depends on the cause, like thermostat, burner, blower motor, or other components. Simple fixes usually cost less; complex repairs can increase the total price.
What is a reasonable price for plumbing?
A reasonable plumbing cost in Portland varies by job type, materials, and labor time. Basic repairs typically cost less than installations or major services. It’s best to consult Central Air Heating, Cooling & Plumbing for a free estimate tailored to your needs.
What is the most common reason a furnace stops working in SW Portland?
The most frequent culprit is a dirty air filter, which restricts airflow and causes the system to overheat or short cycle. This is especially common in wooded Southwest neighborhoods, where heavy fir needles and pollen can clog intake vents more rapidly than expected.
How Often Should I Schedule an Air Conditioner Tune-Up?
We recommend scheduling an air conditioner tune-up at least once per year, ideally in the spring before Portland’s summer heat arrives. Homes surrounded by heavy tree cover may benefit from more frequent check-ups to keep outdoor units clear of debris.
How long do HVAC systems typically last?
Most HVAC systems last 15–20 years, though the heavy tree debris in SW Portland can strain outdoor units more than protected Downtown installations. To ensure your system reaches its full potential, regular maintenance is critical, especially for the aging furnace infrastructure common in NE and SE Portland basements.
