How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Well Through the Fall

Your air conditioner has worked hard this summer and we still have more heat on its way. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re through with your AC for the season. Keeping up with annual AC maintenance, while also following a few other tips, can help you maintain your air conditioner while keeping your home comfy too.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Debris can build up around your outside unit, specifically during the fall. When the time arrives to rake up the leaves in your yard, make sure to rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can inhibit air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down faster. We want your air conditioner to last as long as possible.

Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Have your thermostat set at the highest temperature you can while still remaining comfy. Whenever possible, take advantage of additional cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to reach that temperature. You may think turning your unit off completely will save on energy and help your system, but that makes more work for it to make up when you flip it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is another contributing factor that could lead to premature system failure.
